Defining the Patient Table |
The Patient table will contain all the data to be included in the PID segment of the message. To determine this data, return to the Message Browser and expand the PID segment:

As before, the orange flags indicate fields that must be specified in the PID segment. These are:

| 5 | Patient Name | The patient name. This consists of two sub-fields: the given name, and the surname. Both must be provided. |
For this tutorial, the application specifications require the following fields to be included:

Each row of the Patient Table window represents a column of the data table it is defining. To fill in the Patient Table, follow the steps you used to create the MessageInfo table:
- Create a new table by clicking the Table icon in the toolbar. The new table, Table0, appears in the Workspace under Tables.
- Right-click the new table and select Rename Table.
- Change the name of the table to Patient.
- Double-click the Patient table in the Workspace. The Patient Table window is displayed.
- In the Description field, type Patient Identification. (This description is optional.)
- In the empty field in the Column Name column, type PatientID. Notice that when you start typing, a new row appears.
- In subsequent rows, in the Column Name column, type FirstName, Surname, DateOfBirth and SocialSecurityNumber.
- In the Data Type column, select the String data type for all items except DateOfBirth. For DateOfBirth, select the Date Time data type.
The resulting table should look like this:
