Chameleon provides some easy methods for translating to and from traditional HL7 2.X formats into XML-type formats. This functionality works independently of other Chameleon interfaces such as the stubcode support.

To invoke the translation from a program:

• Instantiate a Chameleon Engine object appropriate to your language;
• Load a message definition file with the appropriate translation defined; and
• Translate between HL7 and XML by invoking the appropriate method on the Engine object with a string variable containing the message that you wish to translate.

	Iguana Users Simply select the XML Translation Scheme you want to use from the XML tab in the Options window. Then specify the Full XML translation VMD path in your XML channel component. For more information, see To XML File and From XML File.

To learn how to invoke the XML APIs from within your environment, open the XML/HL7 Conversion Example using the HL7 Project Wizard. This generates an example project, which demonstrates how to call these APIs.

Within this framework it is useful to make use of other techniques with Chameleon, such as Auto ACKnowledgments, to generate the ACK messages in a generic manner from inbound HL7 messages.
